Although I personally enjoyed this album a lot, I have to take some side notes as well. First of all I must say that not all songs are equally convincing and the level of interest gets lost at some points. I think that these gentlemen wanted to bring variety into the songs, in which they succeeded. But I think they tried a bit too hard, so a bit less variation in a single song would have made it more powerful and less confusing. The voice of Sacha Maurer is also limited! Not that he's a bad singer, but sometimes I get the feeling that he forces his voice a bit. But for the rest "The Force"has become an entertaining hard rock/heavy metal release that fans of the eighties would surely give a try.

Warrior returns with yet another new, well-known singer, this time with the slot being occupied by former Krokus frontman Marc Storace. The years have been kind to him, as he does a pretty good job overall. Musically the style and feel is very similar to the band's past couple of releases, as there is good distortion and energy throughout. Consistent "Warrior" metal, once again.
The chuggy and flowing title track is a top highlight, as is the nonstop "Naked Aggression." "Hypocrite" has a tough attitude, and the majority of the other selections have their strong points as well, with "Love Above All" being a chunky notable.

These guys came out of nowhere striking like thunder and I can say that I was surprised to see this quartet sounding like a slaughterhouse. Relapse is lately investing more on other sounds and less on brutal as fuck bands (at least less than what it did in the past). If you expect experimental Hardcore or Metal sounds, then this band is not even close to what you are searching for.

The Swedish act has been around since 2003 and has only released two demos. It seems that Relapse’s scouting department quickly noticed their talent and "kidnapped" them before any other label does. Their debut album "The Severed Inception" is already out there, waiting for every extreme metalhead to go and buy it!

As I said earlier, their music is not experimental or anything close to it. It is just straight in your face Death/Grind music full of brutality, hyper-technical breaks and tempo that could easily break your neck. Do not even try to headbang at this speed! The only "experimental" thing someone can find in this album are the few "epic" passages the band has placed here and there, something that makes the whole album sound more diverse, as well as manages to make the approximately 34 minutes of this album sound not enough to satisfy the listener’s sick & twisted hunger (that’s why you will press the repeat button several times).

The heavy as fuck production, the clever compositions and the whole ORIGIN meets DECAPITATED vibe is enough to tempt every Death/Grind maniac. You should check these guys out and see that Sweden is not only about melodic Death Metal. The brutality still remains there!

Geist is a German black metal outfit that saw the unholy light in 2005, and with this ‘Galeere’ they come up with their third album. You don’t know them? Well, do not feel ashamed, neither have I, but I think that this will change because of this new album.
I would describe Geist as a typical exponent of German black metal. ‘Galeere’ brings forth a powerful produced album with five lengthy songs, which is certainly not suited for those who prefer it “true and produced down in the bassment”, yet more to the liking of those who prefer technically well executed black metal with lengthy songs full of variation. Vocalist Cypher D. Rex spits out his lyrics, drawing his inspiration from the everlasting human decline, in a grim German way (and not just because of the lyrics), and combined with the arrangements it makes me think of bands like Grabnebelfürsten, Farsot and Fen (just listen to ‘Unter toten Kapitänen’) regarding the atmosphere, just a bit more straight forward.

It is quite refreshing to hear a band which does not follow the Nordic acts too much (regarding the way it is brought, I can’t tell you about the influences when it comes down to the roots) and just puts down a typical German sound. Not too extreme, yet with enough intensity to be seen as black metal (no way that you can call this avant-garde). Minor influences from other genres enrich the songs on this well produced ‘Galeere’ and to those who don’t mind the label “intelligent” black metal yet who also want it to rage, I would suggest to try this ‘Galeere’ out.

ASHENT were formed in 2002 in Italy. After releasing a demo in 2003, their debut full-length, "Flaws Of Elation" arrived on the scene. "Deconstructive" is their second release, and shows the band gaining in maturity and evolving in a positive direction.

The sound of this album is generally progressive Metal, although there are also smaller influences from Power Metal and classic Metal; one can even hear a slight thrash and Goth influence in their sound. Even though ASHENT is from Italy, they thankfully avoid the over-the-top cheesiness of bands like RHAPSODY OF FIRE. The focus throughout the album is on melody, whether it is from vocalist Steve Braun or through the guitar and the keyboards. However, the band does not forget to add some rhythmic crunch through drums and guitar riffs that involve more than hitting the same note throughout the song. The band as a whole is very talented, and they are not afraid to show it, although they rarely go into the realm of self-indulgence.

One thing that the listener will notice is how short the song lengths are, considering that they are a prog Metal band. This works to their advantage, however, because they keep the songs short and concise and avoid dragging the songs with chorus repetition and endless soloing. The first single, "Imperfect" does a fine job of introducing anyone unfamiliar with ASHENT to their sound. The guitars and keyboards switch back and forth between the lead roles but neither overpowers the other and they actually work quite well together. "Sinking Beneath" is the perfect opener and "Starlinked Innerness" does a good job serving as the album’s only epic song.

"Deconstructive" is surprisingly consistent throughout; a few songs are weaker than others but I could listen to this album from start to finish. The only real negative aspect to the album is how awful and cheesy the lyrics are, but thankfully they rarely get in the way of the excellent music. ASHENT is one of the best Prog/Power bands coming out of Italy today, I would highly advise checking them out.

What’s the case with Sweden, anyway? You can’t get enough of good Metal music delivered by Swedish bands the last...dunno...30 years!?!? IN SOLITUDE is another example of how you can release classic Metal music without being accused as ’copycat’ or ’retrolust’. Had bought their "Hidden Dangers" 7" single a year ago or so, swallowed their notable 2-track offering and waited eagerly for the debut assault. Here it is, finally: "In Solitude" definitely is a good proposal to remember what was the spine of Metal music years ago. Let’s turn some hell on.

The 7" single presented a first draft picture of IN SOLITUDE’s beliefs. Vintage European Heavy Metal with enough of reference to MERCYFUL FATE (mainly), GLORY BELLS, OVERDRIVE and PARASITE, plus BLACK SABBATH and the ’dark’ side of the NWOBHM movement (WITCHFYNDE, ANGEL WITCH etc). "Kathedral" is again featured in this debut album’s tracklist, building up a set of eight (in total) songs that shall make you moan if the above ’reference list’ sparkled your interest. "The longer the writing process took, the darker the songs got. We ended up with a perfect mix of catchy old Heavy Metal and pure hell", drummer Uno Bruniusson says in a Press release, and this comment can sum it up to the whole vibe of "In Solitude".

Pelle Ahman does sing both high-pitched and normal, he gets ’evil’ at times and does a good job in narrating in the songs when needed. A couple of growls do fit in the songs’ scope, plus he sounds ominous enough in the mix, resulting in constructing a persona bringing the early days of King Diamond to mind, but in no way letting loose comparison thoughts; hence, mission accomplished. The music itself overlaps such a contrast, with the guitars assembling an immense wall of riffs and leads (many dual ones, too) while the rhythm section is as traditional as possible giving backing to the guitars themes to be unveiled in pure metallic dignity and gloom.

The production of the album fits like a glove to your old-school European needs, bringing on enough of dark, evil and mystique atmosphere. Would not label anything here as ’Epic Doom Metal’, but fans of bands like e.g. CANDLEMASS and GRAND MAGUS shall take the chance and listen to this album, too, since there is some common fire crossing paths. Still, the base for songs like e.g. "Witches Sabbath", "Kathedral" and "Faceless Mistress" is – again mentioned – the legacy of MERCYFUL FATE and the 80s Swedish Metal scene (linking to the NWOBHM magic); that also reminds me that the chorus melodies here are outstanding, carrying this unique Swedish tradition.

Initially out on LP (via High Roller Records) a couple of months ago, "In Solitude" is now unleashed on CD format via Pure Steel Records and I’m already looking forward to watch the Uppsala-based quintet at Keep It True XII festival late next month. The songs must be killers performed live.

Do not miss the chance to purchase this top-class traditional Metal album, I’d strongly recommend. IN SOLITUDE deserves a big transaction with the Metal fans keeping the 80s flame.

Bump up Them! in your Netflix queue because Texas’ leading purveyors of arthropod grind are back another crusty slab of six legged metal goodness.
Insect Warfare leave the boundary pushing to someone else on their full length debut, World Extermination, instead ripping out 22 minutes of prime Earache style grind.
From the squalls of guitar that kick off the disc, this is a hot stepping slab of relentless insect grind. Unlike fellow Texans Kills the Client, Insect Warfare don’t cut their delicious chocolately grind with caramel sludge. The most you can hope for area few scattered peanuts of punk beat (“Dead Inside,” “Human Trafficking”). (This review has been brought to you by Snickers. Never write while hungry, kids.)
Grind lives and dies by its energetic production, and World Extermination sounds like it could have been recorded by a young Scott Burns, with a tighter, cleaner sound than Insect Warfare’s past EPs, which had more of a blown out sound. Think Utopia Banished spooning World Downfall this time instead of Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses giving Reek of Putrefaction a reach around.
Even the artwork radiates that throwback vibe: a black and white drawing of Old Grim getting all Godzilla on an unnamed metropolis with the assistance of his giant bug menagerie. Sure it looks like Jeff Walker’s design for the Scum cover, but who’s gonna quibble about 100 percent originality when you’re being warfared on by monstrous insects?

Being such a young death metal band, I am surprised to hear such a good record from Ignominious Incarceration. The first two songs are reasonable and have the listener's attention with a slightly more blackened death metal riff in opener "Avarice" and the technical aggression of "Deeds of Days Long Gone". However, it's not until "Elegance in Aggression" that these Brits show their stuff with a chugging riff that leads on to quite a memorable four minute ordeal of melody driven death metal. Their blending of fast and slow tempos, melody and devastating power is what sets them above other new death metal acts. With songs such as "Solitude" to rip through crowds and a dual guitar attack in songs like "Dynasty Damnation", there is surely no stopping Ignominious Incarceration if they set their minds to carry on evolving their sound while maintaining the crisp production that really sustains the sound of "Of Winter Born".

Cool thrash similar to another British band- Xentrix; these guys are perhaps more ambitious, with longer songs and more twists. The singer has a powerful voice which, when going for the higher registers, will remind you of Messiah Marcolin. The music is more effective in the shorter tracks which are nice little thrash gems of the mid-paced variety; a really good band from the British metal underground.

Tragedy hits some bands harder than others. The death-toll in Cali-based Insanity went up to 2 band members on 14th November 2007 when Insanity´s longtime drummer Bud Mills passed away, suffering from esophagal cancer (stage 4). According to the band´s Myspace site, they are luckily getting back to their feet again, slowly but surely anyway.

CHRONICLES OF THE CURSED by Insanity, is the most luxurious product from a rising Chinese underground metal label AreaDeath Productions / Xmusick League; a 2-CD digibook compilation featuring Insanity´s material from 1985-94 - this including their impossible-to-find DEATH AFTER DEATH album (originally released on M.B.R. Records in 1994), a 4-song re-mastered 8-track recording, the band´s most classic 3-track demo from 1985, many live + rehearsal songs, etc. - basically covering the band´s entire catalog perfectly. Plus, this 36-page hard cover digibook comes with liner notes (written by Exhumed´s Matt Harvey and Napalm Death´s Barney), a long and in-depth interview of Insanity vocalist & guitarist Dave Gorsuch, lyrics written both in English and Chinese - and all this added with tons of killer photos from the band´s past years, some of them being really rare and probably even never published before prior to this fantastic release.

But that´s enough about what this release contains and how it overall looks. What about Insanity´s music then, I am already hearing you whining anxiously? What?! You haven´t heard of Insanity before? Are you kidding me? Oh my, shame on you! Well, let me just say that when Insanity started back in 1985, they were one of the most relentless, vicious and aggressive death/thrash metal bands on the face of the earth. No kidding! In fact, I would say they were right there with bands like Possessed, Hellwitch, Slayer, Exodus, etc. – playing a high-velocity death/thrash metal with such intensity and aggression that absolutely dropped some jaws wide open. The music was pure brilliance in terms of their very well executed and skilfully played songs that got many people to bow in front of them in sheer amazement. Songs like “Blood for Blood”, “Ultimate Death”, “Fire Death Fate” and many other Insanity songs became instant classic numbers among their fans that they always demanded Insanity to play live. For those who never got an opportunity to see the band live, I think it was a very good call from the band to include some of that live material for this luxury compilation CD, just giving a taste of how tight and aggressive they already were when playing live shows back in the day. The sound quality of those live tunes varies quite a lot, but that´s only a minor point because Insanity truly slaughtered live.

However, much like Hellwitch from Florida, US, Insanity never got a chance to take those few, last important steps to bring them to the same league as bands like Possessed or Exodus, but they always stayed more or less as a relatively unknown underground force that somehow missed all opportunities to bring things to the next level. Signing a deal with the German M.B.R. Records wasn´t probably one of their best choices they have made in their whole career, but at least they got their debut album released eventually unlike many of their fellow bands from those days.

CHRONICLES OF THE CURSED is nothing but a mandatory package for every Insanity fan – and actually for everyone else for that matter, who can still appreciate the past times of some of these finest and most talented underground metal bands that quite never made it big for themselves, but whose destiny was to stay as an underground act for their entire lifespan. Get this while you still can because this is limited to 1000 copies only – and probably a very limited die-hard version (a fancy-looking box, limited to 200 copies; including also an Insanity patch, a longsleeve shirt and a button) is already sold out.

This band was formed by Ron Mcgovney after he left Metallica. Unfortunately, unlike Dave Mustaine, he couldn't break it big despite the recruitment of the drum wizard Gene Hoglan and Katon W. Depena from Hirax on vocals. The style is actually not too distant from Hirax consisting of short speed/thrash outbursts, but is a bit more technical and aggressive. Looked like a beginning of a successful career, but...

Pretty decent power/speed/thrash metal EP along the lines of Attacker and Aftermath, which also features one fast, aggressive, less than a minute thrasher ("In Your Boots"), and a more melodic closer sounding like a more aggressive Motorhead ("Lick The Knife").

Based on the "Plagues of Death" demo, this is cool speed/thrash similar to the Forbidden debut, but with a dirtier sound, and a more aggressive attitude. UNREST are back... And with a bloody voodoo night even... OK, let's get out the protection-amulets and enter this dangerous terrain.

With "Runaway" the quintet offers us an ideal opener, double-bass-driven Power Metal with Sönke Lau's usual rough vocals (which fit very well) and a good chorus, add to that the heavy guitars, if they manage to keep that up, we're in for something big! And despite the title, my protection-spell saves me from the fate of running away already.

"Redlight Fantasy" somehow reminds me of GRAVE DIGGER, those guitar-attacks and then only acoustic guitar and vocals, apart from that it's up the same alley as the opener, so they continue very good... Oh, now they are going "Straight To My Heart", raise the amulet - stomping it advances on me, with a good melody, good one!

"Run Through The Night", now they are hunting me through the darkness out there, driven on by double-bass, again with a strong choir in the chorus, fine! Oh my god, "Pain" is slowly advancing with mid-tempo, just to attack with this one word in the chorus, this warning came just in time, otherwise I might have fallen victim to this voodoo night already, but cannot hold the level of the other songs...

Hm, the "Master Of Disguise" hasn't found the right guise, because he's thundering towards me, GRAVE DIGGER in the chorus, still sounds good and I didn't have to waste another amulet for my rescue. But what is this? "X.T.C.", oh my God, the spell is breaking, aargh, that's blood! That thing has hit me, and with such a gruesomely shallow chorus, that would almost have had me, so let's move on quickly...

"Party To Night"... This time I've had my ward ready, packed into a mid-tempo-track the chorus again attacks flatly, also cannot keep up the good quality of the beginning, but with the right warding you can get over it. But what's going on now? What has happened to the lyrics, "Searching For A Melody" is no better... Ouch! That hurt, another ward crumbled away! The music is OK, not too heavy, middle pace, quite melodic, but the lyrics, man...

OK, almost made it through, but I have to be careful, "Stars Would Shine On A Stormy Night" is advancing a whole lot more aggressive and faster, a formidable foe, ehm, song, they haven't given up on me yet! But what's that now? "Voodoo Masters Drum Revenge"? A kind of drum-solo at the end? With guitars? Oh my god, I haven't been prepared for this, I don't have any wards against that! Aaaaaaaaargh, they got me... This is the end...

But before I take my last breath, if you get over the (mostly lyrical) fillers of "Pain", "X.T.C." and "Party To Night" (which at least partly are OK musically), UNREST have managed to forge a strong piece of steel with "Bloody Voodoo Night", which friends of the rather simple, yet effective Heavy/Power Metal should like. But now I feel that the end is near, so I better - ack...

Mob Rules celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year and it is also exactly ten years ago that their debut album ‘Savage Land’ got released. During the past decade the band has built up quite a reputation and has established their name within the underground heavy metal borders, but the definite break-through seems to stay off. Personally I don’t understand why, because not only has the band proved its qualities time after time, they have also shown progress with each record. An absolute highlight in the band’s career was definitely the sixth studio effort ‘Ethnolution A.D.’, that appeared exactly three years ago.

The question that remains now is whether the seventh album ‘Radical Peace’ has the necessary means to conquer the well-deserved acknowledgement. After hearing the album I can say a loud “Yes”! From the opening track ‘Children Of The Flames’ onwards the band grabs you by the ears and demands your full attention. The even more symphonic and classical approach that was revealed on ‘Ethnolution A.D.’ has been worked out furthermore and perfected. The dragging, dreamy keyboards sound majestic and massive and see to the necessary excitement. Fortunately this doesn’t go at the cost of the guitars and the great guitar duo Mineur/Lüke do magic with their powerful riffing and beautiful solos. There is also enough room for the tight rhythm section. Drummer Nikolas Fritz is audibly in great form and leaves no part of his drums unpunished and Makus Brinkmann’s exciting bass lines come especially to their right in the slower and more melodic overtures. And finally singer Klaus Dirks sounds more convincing than before and despite his limited capacities, he shines more than he ever did.

One particular track that should/may not stay unmentioned and forms the heart of the album is ‘The Oswald File - Ethnolution II’. As the title already reveals, this is a follow-up for the six-track epos that shined on the last album. However, ‘The Oswald File’ is not a conceptual follower of the previous story, but the addition ‘Ethnolution II’ has more to do with the song’s character. This is again a six-piece masterpiece, dealing with the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the main suspect Lee Harvey Oswald. With this eighteen-minute epos Mob Rules again proves to be one of the masters in “concept songs”. This musical piece is highly variable and sound so damn exciting from the beginning to the end that it’s impossible to get distracted. The six-pack also contains many different layers and interesting details, so that every listening turn offers new discoveries and - despite its long playing time - keeps standing ground.

Mob Rules has again set a step forward with ‘Radical Peace’ and has outdone itself on all fronts. The album is also one that may not be missing in any melodic, symphonic heavy metal collection. I must say that due to its diverse character, the album needs several listening turns to come fully to its right. And you really should grant it the time it needs!

When it comes to obscure 80's Black/Death, the elusive GRAF SPEE album can surely count as one of the rarest pieces ever released. Starting out already in the mid 80's as a more traditional Metal band, they developed into the most extreme Metal act in their home country of Uruguay. Before the end of the decade they managed to get their debut album out on the only record label in the country, which makes them label mates with the legendary ALVACAST, but there the similarities end.

GRAF SPEE didn't let a few lessons short of musicianship stop them from writing both brutal and intricate, rhythmically challenging music. Their sound is hard on the nerves at first listening, and it takes a few spins before you get into the songs and start to grasp their ideas. It's a mystery where they got their influences from, because "Reincarnation" does not sound like any other album of its time. The only comparison I can think of would be Colombians REENCARNACION, but without the violins and sound effects. I guess bands like MORBID ANGEL and NOCTURNUS also played around with this kind of musical perversions at the time, but GRAF SPEE still stood alone in their Lovecraftian 5th dimensional corner of Metal Space. Despite their weak playing. Despite the awful production. On the subject of the production btw: another confusing element of this record is the difference in sound on side A and B. Side B is the strongest one with a slightly more coherent rhythm section and less muddy mix. Here even their fast moments, like the excellent "Kali Yuga", sound like they could impress even those Deatheads not yet used to the chaotic South American primitive sound. On the other hand, when they (try to?) blast away in the beginning of "Freedom" it's really hard to tell if it's genius or incompetence that makes the rhythm of this opening song sound so dark and offbeat. Personally I find their doomy, twisted stuff the most interesting, like the sick titletrack and the epic "Patala Loca". With all those wailing riffs and chords feeling slightly out of place, Victor's alternating between high and low growling and the unconventional and foreboding cover art of the battleship Graf Spee in your mind, GRAF SPEE can be very disturbing. Like being bullied and pushed around by spiky black demons on your final bus ride down into the pits of Hades. Yes, it is definitely something you need to hear. I think you'll like it too.

The debut: Gothenburg-influenced thrash/death metal- think Dark Tranquillity with a pinch of thrash, and nice melodic guitar work, plus two vocal styles fighting throughout: one-more death metal-lish, the other on the black metal side. "Terraphobic" fits this description as well, although the sound is much closer to thrash this time, and the melodic hooks have been increased, making some songs sound quite catchy in a playful, Children of Bodom-like manner. "Full Speed Ahead" is probably the only track which is pure death metal, and justifies its title quite well.

It is an album that had to deal with great expectations. Predecessor 'The Perfect Is The Enemy Of The Good' had been a small masterpiece, and the new record was expected to hold at least a couple of crushing 'Forlani'-sized hardhitters. That expectation does not seem to be completely realistic at a first listen. 'There Will Be Blood' may be a strong song, but Burnt By The Sun does not show its many talent very easily on this last work. In other words; the listener is expected to shed some blood, sweat, and tears on this grower before being able to headbang on the bone-splintering riffs of 'Inner Station', 'Goliath', or 'The Great American Dream Machine'. The mixture of '90's-style noisecore (say Deadguy) and the ultra-tight grindroots of the rythm-section Dave Witte (Discordance Axis, Human Remains) and Teddy Patterson (Human Remains, Gridlink) hits your eardrums harder than a speed-train. This is streamlined chaos optima forma, and no other band will be able to physically follow.

Listening to the inhumane, and incredibly varied vocal performance of Olender, Witte; the living “drum-computer from hell”, and the breathtaking tightness of the band as a whole it is incomprehensible that this metal superbeast just calls it quit like that. Still, without being able to tour a lot because of many line-up changes the band never fully lived up to their potential. Yet with their previous records and this impressive 'Heart Of Darkness' they will leave a heritage that will shake the ground until far into the future. Whoever overlooks this one this year is deaf, blind, and very, very ignorant. Long story short: OBLIGATORY BUY MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

The English duo Blutvial delivers its first full length with their statement ‘I Speak Of The Devil’, after relasing their first EP ‘Full Moon Posession’ in 2007. The duo is made out of Andy "Aort" McIvor, also known from Code (!) and Decrepit Spectre, and singer Ewchymlaen (Reign Of Erebus). To those familiar with this year’s earlier release by Code, and who look for similarities: well, there are some, yet Blutvial is rawer and much more primitive, closer to the roots.

This album is actually an interpretation of early Mayhem and the guitar sound of Burzum’s ‘Filosofem’ transferred to this age with a structure of songs that do remind of Code. Furthermore the band also uses some doom passages, yet not so much and thorough as for instance a band called Skitliv. The music is good to hear, is well worked out, yet I do miss something which makes this album different than the classics: let’s call it an X-factor, or the fact that the riffs sound familiar and I feel too little of their own.

A sound album, technically way above the average which is common in the genre, yet a little short of being really impressive. Nevertheless I can advise Blutvial to all black metal fans, and also to Code diehards who wish to try it out a bit more ferocious and nihilistic.

Based on "Seducer Of Human Souls": the classic 80's sound of bands like Slayer, Sodom, Destruction, the Bay Area bands are brought to us for the upteenth time this millennium, this time mixed with some old school Floridian death metal. The result is crushing, occasionally fast music which will delight both thrash and death metal fans. Apart from the all out thrash assaults, the guys try something more technical, and although now these are only sparkles here and there, this could later bring better results.

Based on "Masochistic Devil Worship", this is a band who manage to put into one album quite a few styles; the base is classic black/thrash metal- think early Bathory, Kreator, Sodom, but with both musiciahship and production qualities considerably better. On the other side some songs carry this light crossover, and even punk attitude which works quite well combined with the rest. Throw a slight pinch of old school Floridian death metal into this already non-standard mixture, and you'll get music which would be appealing to a wider circle of metal fans.

In October 2006 after thirteen years finally the fourth studio album of Winger was released, simply entitled ‘IV’. That album, like in fact all Winger albums so far, was very much appreciated by yours truly and therefore I was very curious whether this ‘Karma’ could again match my high expectations. Luckily I can answer this question with a big yes, because ‘Karma’ is even better than the already mentioned reunion record from 2006.

The swinging ‘Deal With The Devil’ opens very good and showcases a very aggressive singing Kip Winger. Also ‘Stone Cold Killer’ is a mighty fine rocker and is dominated by a groovy guitar riff which makes it kind of impossible to sit still. As usual the guitar work of Reb Beach is truly awesome and he delivers one impressive solo after another. Of the other eight tracks on offer here I especially like ‘Pull Me Under’, the ballads ‘Always Within Me’ and ‘After All This Time’ and closing track ‘Witness, but the other songs aren’t too far behind in quality. It is and still remains a shame that this great band has been in hibernation mode for such a long time, but that had everything to do with the musical direction in the nineties.

‘Necrology’ is Sweden-based My Own Grave’s second full-length album. The band cooperated with Dan Swanö in his Unisound studio and the producer/musician announced to be extremely proud over My Own Grave and the Swedish death metal scene in general. He is right to say so, for ‘Necrology’ shows the band in all its fury.

Their death/thrash is extremely tight, has fierce drumming, heavy-as-fuck rhythms, Slayer-esque solo’s and vocals of Akerfeldt-like proportions. ‘Necrology’ turned My Own Grave in a force to be reckoned with. The next step, a big record label, is imminent.

This one sure was a pleasant surprise! With the rather cheesy cover and album title, I was expecting more of an 80's style "sleaze rock" type of band. However, what we get here is a brand new band made up of members of Talon and Firewind including Talon's lead vocalist Chandler Mogel and Firewind members Mark Cross (drums) and Bob Katsionis (keyboards/guitars) who also produced the album. Outloud also includes Jason Mercury (bass) and Tony Kash (guitars) in the line-up. Toss in a killer mixing job by veteran Tommy Hansen and we have one of the better melodic heavy metal albums to come out this year.

The one thing that stands out right away with the very first listen to this album is the band's penchant for excellent vocal melodies and strong, memorable choruses courtesy of the the very powerful and emotional vocals of Chandler Mogel. Quite frankly, he sounds so much stronger here than on any Talon album that I've heard. With a very powerful Danny Vaughn/ Michael Lee Smith (Starz), Joey Tempest (Europe) type of voice, many tracks have choruses that will get stuck in your head and will have you singing/humming them for quite a while. Most of Outloud's songs including the album opener What I Need, use the very tried and true Saxon style of riff-driven melodic heavy metal that was such a staple of the mid to late 80's and early 90's before the grunge movement all but decimated it. Search For The Truth and Breathing Fire are also prime examples of this "riff-driven" style. Whether it's more of a mid-tempo style or charging heavy metal, the riffs are the driving force with the soaring vocal melodies of Chandler Mogel adding the proverbial "icing on the cake". With We Run, the melodies are turned up a few notches with strong arpeggio driven melodic metal and a huge majestic and soaring chorus; easily the best vocal performance from Chandler Mogel that I've ever heard. Things take a turn towards the heavier side with the charging Accept vibes of Broken Sleep, Out In The Night and the very Hammerfall-ish sounding metal anthem Outloud complete with double-bass fuelled power metal. Outloud also nails the obligatory power ballad style of track that no album like this would be complete without. We get two of them here with the very touching and totally acoustic Lovesigh and the huge classic power ballad This Broken Heart. With a nice balance between quiet, acoustic passages and heavy power chord driven metal, Chandler once again delivers another huge and emotionally charged vocal performance.

The only real fault with this album is that the quality dips a bit mid-album with a couple of very generic and average sounding tracks, yet they are certainly not "skippers". The real strengths, and ones that really grab the listener right away, are found with the first 5 tracks which deliver virtually flawless melodic heavy metal in combining catchy guitar riffs, soaring memorable choruses and a great retro 80's style of sound. Although not really all that original, Outloud has delivered a very, very solid debut album here that would've been a chart topper in the mid 80's to early 90's with the style and quality of their music yet, it's still fresh enough to fit into the current modern music scene. Fans of bands like House Of Lords, Bob Catley and Magnum, Saxon and all the great melodic 80's metal of bands like Dokken, Winger, Skid Row and Scorpions should really check this album out and give it a chance. I really thought that this genre was starting to die off. Outloud has renewed my faith that there are still bands out there that can combine great guitar driven hard rock with excellent melodic vocals and come up with something that is still new and exciting for even the most discerning fans of the genre.

A watch that is made in Switzerland is a certain guarantee for quality, and that’s definitely also the fact for the melodic hard rock that is made by Swiss band Gotthard. Already from their debut album ‘Gotthard’ (from 1992) they throw high quality melodic rock records at the audience and that isn’t about to change with this new one ‘Need To Believe’, on the contrary! Also this CD will in all probability go right to the number one position in the album charts in their home country and has the potential to gain a bigger fan-base out of Switzerland as well, a process that has already started with the latest two studio releases ‘Lipservice’ and ‘Domino Effect.

Because of the fact that Gotthard dares to experiment a little bit more with other musical influences on ‘Need To Believe’, the first listen might feel somewhat strange, but after listening to the whole album for quite a number of times it once again becomes crystal clear that they are still one of the absolute best bands in the genre. Opening track and first single ‘Shangri-La’ has some Eastern influences and is quite different that the usual fast rock song that they normally use as an album opener, but the strong riff, the catchy chorus and the as always great vocals of Steve Lee prove that this is a justified single choice. Another, and probably a more obvious candidate for the single would have been the great, lively ballad ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, but maybe they will choose this one for the second single. Further highlights of ‘Need To Believe’ are the title track, ‘Break Away’ with its beautiful chorus line, the varied ‘I Know, You Know’ and the straightforward rock song ‘Rebel Soul’ (with a very tasty riff of Leo Leoni), which could cause some fireworks in a live situation.

That isn’t to say that the remaining five songs (six if you go for the digipack edition) are of inferior quality, because they’re also great and very worthwhile to listen to. ‘Need To Believe’ is yet another high quality album of these Swiss masters of melodic rock and I just can’t wait to visit one of their live-shows, because that’s where the real strength of Gotthard is displayed. An essential purchase for the fans of somewhat commercial, melodic hard rock!

The line-up includes Fabrizio Damiani- the guitar player of the technical thrashers Rainspawn, but the music here is strictly for the modern 90's thrash lovers. It has dynamics, and the riffs crush wiht force most of the time; it's just that there's little which hasn't already been offered by Pantera and their numerous clones. Things start moving around a bit in the middle, with "Kill FashionCore" whcih is a cool speed/thrasher, and "Welcome to the Brotherhood", which is a heavy 10-ton hammer, but later on the sound safely wraps around the aggro-trends again.

Sometimes you want to travel back in time and remember how things were. In order to do that you need a reason or in this case a band that will press the ignition button in the time machine. In this case behind the button we find THE BLACK that hails from Sweden. This act formed back in the 80s when everything was in the womb of VENOM and a couple of years later inside Quorthon’s mind. The Swedish band self released two demos and after 12 years the first full length "The Priest of Satan" with a really cult artwork.

This time THE BLACK waited 15 years until "Alongside Death" was complete to surface up from the very depths of Hell (quoting from VENOM’s legendary concert introduction). This is exactly the description that fits this old school Black Metal album. And when I am saying ’old school’ I mean everything that it represents; from the high pitched guitars, the out-the-well vocals and the solid blast beats that revealed many great drummers in this scene. "On The Descent To Hell" the band does exactly what the title is saying; it takes you down to Hell with a fast tempo, screaming vocals and some early BATHORY guitars. There is absolutely no room for outsiders here; no fancy keyboards and no crystal clear production just raw power. The Satanic atmosphere we all loved from the 90s lurks in every corner of this album from the tormenting "Death’s Crown" to the mid tempo of "Death Throes". Indeed this is exactly how Black Metal used to sound and based to the core fans they it should be. No offence to CRADLE OF FILTH or DIMMU BORGIR but THE BLACK write the letters in Black Metal in capitals. I mean the microphonics in "Fleshless" are nothing more than cult (or occult if you prefer) while the lead guitars will blast your ears off!

I do not want to write anything more here. THE BLACK are back to re-establish their name in the Black Metal scene with an already classic album. I could not but comment on the simply yet evil-as-hell artwork that has an inverted cross in a "Blairwitch Project" format. One more thing; they should have used the difficult-to-read logo because the simply THE BLACK writing is not old school...

Along with Turbo and Wolf Spider on the field of Polish technical thrash, another band stand proud: Astharoth; this effort is probably the finest achievement in the field from this country, along with another one-album-wonder: Acrimony. These guys use late 80's Kreator ("Extreme Aggression", "Coma of Souls") as a base, and in terms of aggression they easily reach the former, whereas in terms of technicality they go well beyond the latter. All compositions are wonderful blends of an aggressive and a very technical play, and this is one of the few technical/progressive thrash works which will completely win the fans of the more extreme side of the genre. The aggression sometimes turns into all-out bashing, but the very technical break is just around the corner. The complex passages may be a bit hard to swallow at times, accumulating a layer after layer of very technical guitars, bordering on Voivod-ish abstractism and Mekong Delta-like illogicisms on quite a few moments, but they are never very long, and this contrasting picture is just a wonder to listen to. It's hard to think of other releases, which reach the same level of greatness combining aggression and technicality; maybe Hellwitch at their less brutal, Sadus, early Invocator, the French Witches' debut effort, but this one really excels in both departments; by all means one of the most impressive works from the Polish metal scene.

Home is where the heart is; and the metallic heart beats like a drum the time that classic Metal music is heard. MIDNIGHT IDOLS belongs to the category of bands honoring the original Heavy Metal ideals. Hailing from the USA (Seattle), the quintet had already released two ’private’ albums in the recent past - "We Rule The Night" (2006) and "Nightrulers" (2008) - prior to inking deal with Metal On Metal Records for the pressing of their third one herein presented.

Not much to be said, though; the Metal On Metal label is now familiar to metalheads keen on the 80s Metal models and the MIDNIGHT IDOLS album is no exception. While listening to "Sworn To The Night" names of bands like early MAIDEN/PRIEST, CHASTAIN, ACCEPT, early SAVATAGE, SAXON and even MERCYFUL FATE paraded in my mind. The sound/production is quite dirty and so is Diamond’s voice (a bastard mix of Dianno and Grimmett - he could do even better, I think, since he finally sounds somehow flat and uninspired). The songwriting, on the other hand, is quite intriguing, with some notable classic Metal riffs and a helluva great work in the leads section. The bass/drums duties are rather typical but honest to the bone.

Powerful tracks like "Hatred Is Born", "Triumph Of The Sinner" and "Beyond The Darkness" cut like a knife while the whole songlist is available to feed your Metal needs by any means. Good thing with the album is that the more you listen to it the more you may fall for it, something rather weird since this blend may appeal to be typical enough to many. Thankfully, MIDNIGHT IDOLS merge the European and American instructions fine enough and combine them to a good result bearing the genre’s ’classic’ limits.

"Sworn To The Night" is an album you can obviously live without but probably is worth spending some money instead of feeding the grand ’names’ again. MIDNIGHT IDOLS are in the Metal map now and, with some sufficient distribution, have the potential to exchange this loyalty for classic Metal with some wider recognition. Let’s just hope...

Alkemyst are a little known French power/progressive metal band whose debut album Meeting in the Mist was released on Nuclear Blast back in 2003, and thankfully now being reissued/remastered by Metal Mind Productions. I say thankfully because there's a good chance that many fans of the genre missed this one when it first came out, and it's one you wouldn't want to miss if you are a fan of bands such as Helloween, Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, or Angra.

From the artwork, the production, the songs, and the musicianship, the entire package on Meeting in the Mist is pretty solid all around. The vocals of Ramon Messina are squarely in the Michael Kiske vein, and with a two-guitar attack, frantic bass/drum rhythms, and some technical arrangements, you can basically be assured that there's some exciting stuff happening here. The twin guitar harmonies and galloping rhythms of "Up to heaven's gate" will really thrill those into classic power metal sounds, and the complex & symphonic "Hold on to your dreams" brings to mind acts such as Dream Theater and Symphony X thanks to some stunning melodies and jaw dropping virtuosity. Another highlight is the proggy ballad "A meeting in the mist", complete with gorgeous acoustic guitar passages, keyboards, and a symphonic ending sequence, as is the speedy and heavy power metal number "Empty Skies". The real masterpiece though is the 12+ minute suite "Nameless Son", a real prog-metal tour-de-force for the band that contains some intense arrangements that really let the players strut their stuff, but also some great, soaring melodies sung by Messina.

After digesting Meeting in the Mist you'll wonder why Alkemyst never made much of an impact on the scene, however, let's hope that is all about to change, as they have released a follow-up to this debut and are even working on newer material as we speak. Metal Mind's re-issue contains an essay and some words from the band, photographs, and full lyrics, housed in an attractive digipack. Impressive stuff-remember the name...Alkemyst. I'm sure we'll all be hearing more from them in the very near future.

Delivered with striking cover artwork (half an apple with metal pins?), this must be the album that brings together the old and the new fans of the band. The album opens with an instrumental prelude, which smoothly goes over in the first single, the rather heavy but ultra melodious first single, “Last Look At Eden”. What follows is a mature, versatile album that shows us a kind of new-born Europe from various angles: groovy in tracks like “Catch That Plane” and “The Beast” , bluesy in songs like “Gonna Get Ready” and “Only Young Twice” and even modest in the closing ballad, “In My Time”. Besides the above-mentioned single, I consider “New Love In Town” as one of the best tracks on offer. In the year 2009 we can’t expect an album in the vein of “The Final Countdown”. What we get here though, is a more than pleasant platter that could be accepted by a large audience. Let it grow on you and I’m almost sure it will please you as much as it pleases me.

Did Swallow the Sun jump onto the new plane, did they create a new paradigm with New Moon? The answer should be decidedly “no”, as the old trusted melodic doomdeath rules the day. At the same time, within this genre, the band remains completely personable, jerking a quick tear out of the corner of an eye or a momentary throat choke. This is what I personally needed from the band, despite what many would call a lack of progression.

For years Temple Of Baal has been twisting and turning its self-created muddy pool of dirty, underground satanic worship. Their new album is called ‘Lightslaying Rituals’ and it will definitely give the dyed in the wool occultist some pleasant hours of dark listens. The premises for Temple Of Baal are actually pretty simple: you turn your distortion all the way up until your nearing the dirty frequencies of, say, Arkhon Infaustus and you go through your songs on various catchy tempos.

You could call this one-dimensional, however ‘effective’ would be a better choice of words. Without much ado nine intriguing death incantations are rammed relentlessly into your brain. You simply do not get a chance to say no to them. With exactly the right proportions between the catchy speed of thrash, the sheer bluntness of death and the creepy atmospheres of black, Temple Of Baal make it practically impossible to ignore the sheer quality of ‘Lightslaying Rituals’. It is amazing how incredibly addictive simplicity can be!

Those who know Stian Arnesen’s work from his time in Dimmu Borgir or The Kovenant will hopefully as pleasantly shocked as I am when they stumble across his time spent in Troll, a little-known offshoot of the Norwegian Black Metal tree that did great things in its time, and promises to do so again now that a new album is due in 2010. The Industrial Metal of 2001’s Universal is a personal highlight of the subgenre – I have absolutely nothing against the Kovenants of the scene, but they never seemed to be up there in quality with the Dødheimsgards and Arcturuses out there – and yet it’s the band’s debut album that’s the best of the bunch. Troll started when Stian, here going under the name Nagash Blackheart, was just fourteen years old, and Drep De Kristne (“kill the Christian”) is, along with Covenant’s debut, the best and purest Black Metal that he was associated with.

The best thing about the album is, surprisingly, the synths – they’re expertly applied, coating the fuzzy riffs and solid supporting blasts and beats to epic effect. I’m always astonished at the quality of the songwriting here, too, there being exactly zero poor tracks. Opener Kristenhat brings the Burzum, ambient humming becoming strangely symphonic and grandiose, layers forming atop one another as militaristic drums beat a harsh tattoo – then the Black Metal kicks in, wonderfully melodic without losing an iota of viciousness. Nagash’s vocals are throaty and raw, contrasting brilliantly with the rather beautiful music; think early Enslaved but catchy, and you’re more or less there. Unlike some of the other Black Metal bands who made Symphonic Blackness of a high quality, Troll’s synths go beyond the flying-dizzily-over-great-dark-forest effect to something distinctly more mystical and fantastic. The troll of the band’s title is the first thing that comes to mind, and as laughable as it may sound Drep De Kristne do a brilliant job in convincing you of these creatures’ existence.

From the epic invocation of I Saler Av Sten to the near-humpaa of Trollberg, Scandinavian myth meets your basic Black Metal bigotry in a killer combination. The sheer variety on offer is astounding; fine, 1996 was the year that Black Metal began to shapeshift, Satyricon’s Nemesis Divina and Dødheimsgard’s Monumental Possession just two of the albums that stood on the thin line between the genre’s future and its past, and Drep De Kristne is very much of the past, yet we’ve been conditioned to accept poor songwriting from the early Black Metal masters when gems like this exist. Take Naar Solen Blekner Bort, opening with catchy synths before an ahead-of-its-time breakdown and whirring guitars appear, spiralling down through keyboard blasts to incredible effect. On any other album it’d be an unquestionable highlight, yet here it’s surrounded with excellence, and picking out favourite tracks becomes genuinely hard. They’re all great, the bells and whistles of Troll Riket and the manic screams of Med Vold Skal Takes Kristenliv alike – really, this is a brilliant bit of Black Metal, and that Nagash performed all the instruments himself is even more impressive.

As epic instrumental Gud’s Fall introduces the finale title track, it’s hard not to be reminded of Emperor’s classic In The Nightside Eclipse. Drep De Kristne is clearly a different album but there are similar themes explored, and whilst this isn’t as good as the imperial masterpiece it is still a damn good piece of Black Metal, perfect for going out into the woods with on a clear night and paying homage to the sky. Others may have been spacier or more epic with their Black Metal, some were more technical or catchier, but few relics from the 90s could combine all of these into one kickass package, and it remains one of the best pieces of symphonic blackness to come from Norway; a vital listen for all Black Metal fans, as obscure as it sadly is.

A one-man productive Greek black metal machine Dodsferd has put its name in the running for the “miserable” black metal album of the year with Suicide and the Rest of Your Kind Will Follow. For those who followed Dodsferd evolution thus far, Suicide … may feel like an out-of-character surprise that it is. Who knows what kind of mood main man Wrath was for this, but my bet is on him feeling despondent. Gone is reckless pissed off attitude and addictive black’n’roll of Death Set the Beginning of My Journey. What could have been a camp buddy to Horna and Sargeist before, now feels a lot closer to hopeless pessimism of Xasthur and Shining.

Having seen the light of day back in May of 2009, the title track may be a perfect soundtrack to a fall. Steady non-wavering mid-pace rhythm allows layering and developing guitar hooks onto the monotonous main riff structure. As much as the track appears one-dimensional, it has interesting off-shoots throughout, keeping the listener wallowing in his/her own mire. Suicide and the Rest of Your Kind Will Follow is like walking in the rain. You are uncomfortable at first, cold water getting down your neck and behind your shirt. Then, amidst the misery you almost feel defiant, determined to reach your final destination with a quick drum pattern change, only to dissolve into an acoustic final realization that wherever it is you are going, you will arrive there desperately sick from all this cold and wetness.

The other album’s cut, His Veins Colored the Room, starts out as a screeching horror flick and builds in even more of a dreadful atmosphere towards the end, however, this track also finds room for layered melodies. The feeling of unavoidable disaster is prevalent, and Wrath also builds in some jolting synthesizer car break-like squeals for further effect.

Throughout these 37 min Wrath really impresses with his vocals abilities. His howls, a lot less over the top than Silencer, peel the skin off raw, dementia weighing heavily onto listener’s mind.

Suicide and the Rest of Your Kind Will Follow descends into the dread with style. Produced above the level of your average DIY bedroom black metal, it has just the right amount of refinement to be audible, yet emphasizes the urge to bang your head against some dark corner in the most remote room in your dwelling when all seems lost.

Anthropia is a French band who with 'The Chain Reaction' release their second album. In 2006 the band debuted with the album 'The Ereyn Chronicles Part One' which was released on the famous Magna Carta label. Even more than nowadays the band then was a solo project of guitarist/vocalist/ composer Hugues Lefebvre. Now he has gathered other musicians around him, but still Hugues is the man who writes and rules. Fortunately, the man understands the art of composing.

'The Chain Reaction’ is a concept album. In short, the story is about a 'soul' that has had enough of always having to obey orders from his masters. He is being kept on a leash and a lot of promises are made. He decides to only do what he wants in his next life. But this behaviour and the loss of his soul mate, result in an unexpected ending; the end of human kind. You may understand it is a science fiction story which also has some biblical elements. The implementation of the songs is perfect and the CD also sounds very solid (Tommy Hansen did the mastering of the CD, Hugues himself was responsible for the production). The music reminds me a lot of the work of Pain Of Salvation and to a lesser degree of a band like Evergrey. Everything a concept album in this genre needs is there: heavy parts and sensitive passages, flashy solos and beautiful acoustic guitar parts, great solo and harmony vocals (the combination of Hugues and Nathalie Olmi is perfect), pounding drums and atmospheric piano pieces. The highlight of the CD for me is ‘The Torn Off Wing Of The Butterfly’ because of all the ideas that are incorporated in that song. For fans of the bands mentioned above, this is a compulsory purchase.

he question whether the Finish super group Cain’s Offering is in fact a Frontiers project or a real band is haunting me already for a while and hopefully the answer will be that it’s a real band who’s certainly going to perform live and will make more records. The band, which consists of ex-Sonata Arctica and ex-Altaria guitar player Jani Liimatainen, Stratovarius singer Timo Kotipelto, ex- Sonata Arctica keyboard player Mikko Harkin, Wintersun bass player Jukka Koskinen and Paul Di’Anno Drummer Jani Hurula leaves a very good impression on their debut album ‘Gather The Faithful’, that’s for sure. Main man proves to be guitar player Liimatainen who wrote all of Cain’s Offering’s material and who has also produces the debut album, but you shouldn’t underestimate the importance and added value of the other band members. Especially singer Kotipelto sounds great, a lot better than what he did on the last Stratovarius album.

The band is to be situated in the same genre as the previous bands of Liimatainen and that’s the progressive metal genre. They do this in a great way as proven by both opening tracks of the record, the up-tempo ‘My Queen Of Winter’ and the more mid-tempo ‘More Than Friend’, which are both real good metal songs with flashy guitar work and nice keyboard parts. The following ‘Oceans Of Regret’ has some more progressive influences, while title track ‘Gather The Faithful’ is a very bombastic instrumental, which reminds by sometimes at Nightwish. Also the next five tracks are very enjoyable, with a special mention for the complex, almost seven minutes long ‘Morpheus In A Masquerade’, which will take you quite a number of listens before it’s digestible. The only lowlight of the album is closing song ‘Elegantly Broken’, of which the keyboard intro is identical to the melody of the eighties pop song ‘Tell It To My Heart’ of Taylor Dane. Besides this nothing than praise for this fine debut album!

I was not particularly familiar with Brazilian deadly thrashers Claustrofobia until a fellow reviewer told me that Candlelight had yet another thrash related band up for grabs. Since most thrash bands that come out of Brazil tend to possess a certain amount of quality, I took the bait, and well, this is damn good. It should however be noted that Claustrofobia‘s fourth album has just as much in common with death metal as with thrash metal. The guttural vocals will jump out and punch you in the face a long with fast rolling riffs that are extremely heavy. To be honest, I’m not the biggest death metal fan, but this grabbed me at once. May it be the Sepultura-like guitars and song-writing or the faint brutal touch of Cannibal Corpse, either way if you like fast, relentless and uncompromising death metal with loads of top notch thrash-moments that’ll make you bang the head like a maniac, Claustrofobia should definitely be on your list.

Even though this may seem a tad bit long with its fifteen tracks, it never really comes of as tiring in the very least. There are plenty of outstanding songs that consists of memorable riffs, rapid drums, and gut-wrenching growls that will rip the flesh of your face. The monotone nature that often strips death metal bands of their colour and make them easy to write off is simply not a factor here. These guys knows how to make their songs sound interesting be it two-and-a-half-minute straight-forward face-smashers or 5-minute slightly more melodic yet violent assaults like the brilliant Bonded By Blood-era Exodus-like Don’t Kill the Future that’ll actually remind you of the old days in a good way rather than making you wish you had a veteran band in your cd-player. Except the one interlude here, each song is as crushing as the other and as blood flows from your gashed head, Claustrofobia will do nothing to heal the damage.

There is not much more else to say without me sounding like a broken record, than that this may have been Candlelight’s most interesting outing in a while in between the tons of retro-trash acts that have spamming the metal universe for a while now. Claustrofobia deliver on all parts, and though this is absolutely nothing new, it’s a damn fun and entertaining listen even for metal-heads that are not too fond of death metal for some reason. I have not yet dug into this band’s past, but I guess I have to now as this kind of took me by surprise, and I like surprises. Highly recommended!

By now every black metal fan, even the vaguely interested, has heard of The Ruins Of Beverast. Of course, this is not without reason as the music this one-man group has delivered, surely has made its carvings in the black metal tree of life. Indeed, ‘Unlock The Shrine’ and ‘Rain Upon The Impure’ changed the way many perceived black metal. Am I being overly dramatic here? I think not. In any case the third instalment, enigmatically called ‘Foulest Semen Of A Sheltered Elite’, has some serious shoes to fill.

For ‘Foulest…’ I personally expected a departure from its predecessor or at least a stylistic difference. At first glance this is actually not the case. The tone of the guitars, the sound effects and the drums all more or less sound like they did on ‘Rain Upon The Impure’, although with a much clearer and modern production. Sound-wise this is quite an improvement over the rather noisy affair ‘Rain Upon The Impure’ was, although it served a purpose then. This newly found clarity does come with a trade-off though. Much of the mystique that surrounded the previous works has disappeared. It is as if the music of The Ruins Of Beverast is naked.

The songs on ‘Foulest Semen Of A Sheltered Elite’ carry a personality of themselves rather than being part of a whole. Not that the album is disjointed of fragmented, but the songs all make a point of their own and come to that particular point rather quickly. For some that may be something positive others may prefer otherwise. I remain neutral on this issue. As a whole this album will not shake the foundations of black metal like previous efforts did, but this sure is a very good album indeed. In case I may have suggested otherwise. Musical artist Alexander von Meilenwald again came up some brilliantly atmospheric pieces of black metal art, (and I would like to stress the word artist once more) as well as furious aggression and unusual bits and pieces scattered around and no fanatic in their right mind should take a pass on this one. ‘Foulest Semen Of A Sheltered Elite’ may not be very different but nevertheless impressive and essential in its own right.

After releasing two MCDs, notably one earlier this year (Autumnal Heavens), Augrimmer finally bring us their debut album, From the Lone Winters Cold. This act is now a trio formed of founder Nord (guitars), Satan (vocals and bass) and Draugh (drums). Augrimmer came to life a decade ago as a one-man project. The German trio is labeled as "Northern Black Metal", which I believe is right on.

Black and white cover art, fast and grim music, discrete rasps and subtle hues make Augrimmer interesting to listen to and discover. Nothing fancy as such or even new to be heard on this disc, just good old coldness. The sound production is a bit raw, fitting their musical direction quite well. Their music is not constantly stuck on those blast beats, Augrimmer can easily moderate to those well appreciated mid-tempos, allowing nice atmosphere and crushingness to sink in. What makes this CD more pleasant are all those extra musical harmonies that were included. Sometimes, they take the form of folksy or epic passages; otherwise they can be clean arpeggios or even some darkly ambient keyboard passages. All of those delicacies bring out their own melodious touch on such great number such as "From the Lone Winters Cold", "A Ride to Celestial Night" and "At Winterdawn". "Bearer of Sorrow" uses a classical guitar in the intro, as well as a couple of times later on during the song. Closer "A Thrail of the Night" ends the album perfectly by making the heavy crunchiness and melodic aspects alternate in harmony.

From Lone Winters Cold is one more safe Black Metal release from Germany.

Even within the grimmest of frostbitten winterdemons hides a goddamn hippie. How can one otherwise explain the constant urge to merge “happy” and “metal” into something that actually makes sense? So far, this fusion had mostly led to the most abominable cheesefests known to mankind, but if there is one person on this world to whom we can entrust the task of creating a genuinely good natured metal album it’s Devin Townsend. Since ‘Addicted’ is exactly such an album, check your corpsepaint at the door please.

With the brooding and restrained ‘Ki’, the first part of his four album project, Townsend may have alienated parts of his fanbase, so let’s start this review with some assuring words: ‘Addicted’ is a lot more representative of what Devin has done in the past. The album is very much in line with what he did with The Devin Townsend Band, Ocean Machine, Ziltoid, etcetera. There is only one slight difference: ‘Addicted’ is a lot better! Despite more or less returning to the kind of loud, layered, musicalised metal he Canadian is known for, Townsend has retained the newfound confidence and his open mind to an open sound that could be found on ‘Ki’. This has resulted in his most crushing production and, more importantly, his strongest songwriting to date.

‘Addicted’ sounds instantly recognizable. Devin’s trademark style is just all over the place. From the opening title track to the subsequent ‘Universe In A Ball!’, a rollercoaster ride of a track with a very unusual beat, everything sounds extremely familiar, but then the next song, the brilliantly titled ‘Bend It Like Bender!’ is a complete curveball; with its upbeat rock-meets-disco rhythm and a chorus that is about as catchy as the Mexican flu, the album kicks into top gear from these on. It is also this song the features the first of several utterly dominating performances by Anneke van Giersbergen (Agua De Annique, ex-The Gathering), who appears on eight out of this album’s ten songs.

The remaining songs just keep this momentum going right until the very end of these 46 minutes. ‘Addicted’ is simply a barrage of great riffs and excellent choruses that are a clear invitation for singing along obnoxiously loud and woefully out of tune whilst driving insanely fast on the motorway. Naming any highlights would be a nigh impossible task, but a song that does stand really out is ‘Hyperdrive!’, which may be very familiar to everyone owning the ‘Ziltoid’ record. Anneke’s rendition of the song on ‘Addicted’ is not only by far superior to the original, it is also simply goosebump inducing. What makes ‘Addicted’ stand out so much is the fact that this is just an unapologetically heavy album. It’s simply loud, good fun, without any trace of guilt, shame or any of that. What is left is an album filled with straightforward, seemingly simple songs that have a lot going on beneath the surface. ‘Addicted’ also features stellar performances from Townsend, drummer Ryan van Poederooyen en most of all Anneke van Giersbergen, who has easily done her very best work since leaving The Gathering.

Finally some words of comfort to all those grim and frostbitten winterdemons: don’t be afraid to include this one in your top 10 of 2009. Given how uplifting and FUN ‘Addicted’ is, this album might just as well be much more dangerous than the whole Burzum back catalogue, especially if listened to in traffic. It’s either that or you’ll get a number of speeding tickets that is simply criminal.

In the new Millennium these Swedes released a peerless album every three years. After slightly riff oriented albums as ‘Viva Emptiness’ and ‘The Great Cold Distance’, ‘Night Is The New Day’ turned out way much calmer, soaring and - if we may use the word in this respect - more symphonic. There is a simple explanation for that. On previous albums, scanty keyboard parts were played by guitarist Anders Nyström; this time they worked with a keyboard-wizard. Frank Default has put a proper mark on this album, however without estranging the Katatonia sound ever. The band already knew the man after cooperation for ‘Unfurl’ (one can find this track on the EP ‘July’) and they needed a slight evolution.

That’s the way we like it: a band that does not stagnate, but always looks for new boundaries without renouncing its own identity. I did play the album lots of times before starting to write down my impressions, since these “nearly-chansons” demanded a bit of get used to after former, heavier albums; certainly after watching the band mainly in a live situation recently (they are a bit heavier anyway then). In the end I came to the conclusion that this is a masterpiece with a number of classic Katatonia gems. Maybe I just should stick to what the band says: there are prog moments, doom, folk and classic melodic songs. But I like to go a bit deeper into the matter.

‘Forsaker’ is the start of this melancholic, dark trip through heart and soul. It is linked up with the previous album ‘The Great Cold Distance’, lyric-wise as well as music-wise. Them greasy guitars join heavily in between the contemplative vocal lines of Jonas and fluttering guitar sounds are magnificent. ‘The Longest Year’ - pitch black as night - bridges again earlier work by its dreamy timbre. From ‘Idle Blood’ on, evolution is noticeable. Acoustic guitars: did we hear this before with Katatonia? Strings, mellotron and symphonic arrangements. New! And vocals… I know that Jonas and Mike Akerfeldt have been friends for a long time, but are you sure that Mike wasn’t behind the microphone for just one song? Anyway, this song is very Opeth-like. In contrast with what the title might surmise, ‘Onward Into Battle’ appears to be a very placid song in which vibrating guitars reign. Heavy riffs and the “old” style with great guitar leads can be found in ‘Liberation’, a song that could have been on earlier albums easily. Synths are used in a modern way in ‘The Promise Of Deceit’. My speakers almost blow up by these ponderous sounds. Loads of keyboards, semi-spoken and a kind of distance it creates. ‘Nephilim’ has parts that are very progressive, vocals are conjuring and thoughtful, though an eruption of bushy guitars isn’t missing. Personal and fragile is ‘New Night’, this song instantly speaks to the heart. For one or another reason ‘Inheritance’ reminds me of current Anathema. Maybe due to strings, vocals with echo and bits of modern sounds. ‘Day And Then The Shade’ is the single. A videoclip will be shot for this one and it is a catchy song (mark the perfect contrast between riffs and mellotron). It is in the vein of the three singles of the previous album. The last song has a surprise. Sometimes we find Jonas doing guest vocals on other bands’ albums (see interview for more details). Well, ‘Departer’ is sung by Krister Linder (Enter The Hunt). Initially there seems to be not a great difference in timbre and style with Jonas, but I soon found out to be mistaken. Soon you notice that it is someone else behind the microphone. The song has a slightly folkloristic, but also symphonic flavour. Think of Pink Floyd in troubadour style. Isn’t this a very fresh, surprising Katatonia album? But once more a stunner in unique Katatonia tradition! I finish with one more remark: with the former album I wrote that it is exceptional that they can invoke such a melancholic feel without using keyboards or piano. Well, that has changed by now.

The second album from Nile mainman Karl Sanders’ self-titled side-project continues along the same path that 2004’s Saurian Meditation started. For those not in the know, Sanders released the first album in his name to use leftover instrumentals and interludes from Nile, but it has taken five years for Saurian Exorcisms to arise, suggesting that he’s taking his time with this and created an album rather than just stuck some leftovers together. Saurian Exorcisms does seem a more complete and enjoyable album than its occasionally rather dull predecessor; there’s more emphasis on percussion and less on ambience this time around, Rapture of the Empty Spaces giving off a pleasingly Dead Can Dance-y vibe with the male and female wailing and complex ethnic instrumentation, most of it performed by Sanders. There’s a good deal of variety, the acoustic strums and percussion of Contemplate This on the Tree of Woe up against the ominous chants and invocation of A Most Effective Exorcism Against Azagthoth and His Emissaries – if you enjoy the spooky vibe that Nile’s instrumentals can have, then you’ll love this.

Although it’d be easy to pigeonhole Saurian Exorcisms as being for Nile fans only, there’s a great deal more to it than that. I mentioned Dead Can Dance above, and that’s the best comparison, but I can’t remember them ever being this ominous or overtly complex. The chants, percussion and, for want of a better term, whooshing of Slavery Unto Nitokris alone are simply gripping, forming a rhythmic pulse that is the very heartbeat of the Ancient Egyptian atmosphere that Sanders is seeking to invoke – those who foolishly doubt his proficiency as a musician should have their minds fully made up here. Whether it’s the baglama saz, the glissentar or the various percussion instruments, Sanders does a wonderful job, and although there are no nine-minute monsters like Of the Sleep of Ishtar here (the longest track being just over six minutes) he packs a lot in. Although tracks can be as short as the three-and-a-half-minute Kali Ma, an aggressive pounder with twisted, epic orchestration, they do generally seem to be pieces of music in their own right rather than mere bookends for bits of Death Metal, which is a good thing.

What I find particularly interesting is how Sanders creates all this without using frequent vocals. You can hear the occasional chants or bit of throat-singing, but mostly this is an instrumental project, and as much as I’d like to hear Lisa Gerrard’s gorgeous voice wailing all over it, Saurian Exorcisms never once suffers for lack of vocals as instrumental projects all too often can. Where vocals are used, they’re used exceptionally well – the strange, alien voices on Impalement and Crucifixion of the Last Remnants of the Pre-Human Serpent Volk, for example, changing to howls and screams mixed with clattering metallic percussion. I mention a few highlights below, but the truth is if you appreciate music of this sort then the whole album will be of interest for you – it’s a cliché, but turn out the lights, put on the headphones and turn this up, and the experience is amazing. Sure to be forgotten against the crushing might of the excellent new album from his main band, Saurian Exorcisms is nonetheless a remarkably good piece of music, showing the other side of Ancient Egypt and reminding what a brilliant talent Karl Sanders is, as if such a reminder was needed.

This is the debut full-length album from this band from Finland. It is much in the same vein as fellow Finnish power/prog metallers Stratovarius. Hell Timo Tolkki even makes a guest appearance on the song "Like Father, Like Son" so the comparisons will definitely be made between the two bands. Although Stratovarius is a well-established band that has been putting out albums for more than ten years these new comers are not to far behind them in the quality of their songs or musicianship.

The album is full of excellent songs that run mainly in the power metal genre but there are more than a few prog and pure metal influences that creep in as well. The musicianship is top notch with the highlight being the far better than average guitar work. Some really cool groove oriented riffs and absolutely killer melodies and solos. The vocals are as good as you would expect from this genre but done at a slightly lower pitch which fits the music extremely well. There really isn’t a bad thing I can say about this album and the only reason I didn’t give this a perfect rating is I am starting to compare debut albums in this genre by Dream Evil’s debut disc…a bit unfair considering how damn good that album is but this disc from Thunderstone may just be able to get Dream Evil’s disc out of my player for a while which says quite a bit for the quality of this album.

Any fan of power, prog or even pure metal will find this album a very good listen and well worth the purchase price. Highly Recommended.

Coming from the land of the 10.000 lakes, THUNDERSTONE are a well reputed band that has managed since 2000 that it was formed to produce some fine moments of heavy metal. “Evolution 4.0” is their latest achievement trying to push the band one step forward.
The album starts with a small intro of an electronic voice and goes on dynamically with solid songs, up tempo beats and a progressive mood. Fast rhythms, smart cuts and heavy guitarwork make the puzzle that “Evolution 4.0” consists of. I have to give special credits to the singer and his magnificent voice that give this hard rock tone to the compositions of the band. Not that the others fall behind: the rhythm section is punctual and the guitar solos are technically efficient. I really enjoyed the harmonic nature of their riffs that is backed up by the keyboards and the beautiful vocal lines that top everything. There are some great choruses in there!
THUNDERSTONE have managed to create their own sound that is heavy, progressive based and hard rockish at the same time. They are not the typical European power metal band and they have similarities with the equivalent American scene, but with the sense of harmony that characterizes the Northern European hard rock scene. They balance heavy/power riffing with progressive outbreaks and modern rhythmic parts in a blend that comes out with a great production that lets the songs breathe and flourish.
One thing is for sure, “Evolution 4.0” is a decent heavy metal album that will be liked by all those who like Gotthard, Jorn Lande, Talisman and other bands like this. Should be checked out!

Mixing styles of David Coverdale (Whitesnake) and Dio with a slight hint of Joey Tempest (Europe), the opening track “Tools of the Devil” has heavy bass pounding riffs and melodic keyboards. If you like 80’s metal mixed with power metal -- you will love this release. Each song has that great 80’s metal vibe brought up to date in a power metal form.
“Without Wings” highlights Kari Tornak's keyboards with more than your basic power metal sound. Kari's sound is more like Keith Emerson ala “Brain Salad Surgery.” “I Will Come” is a slower song that has rippling guitar chords among the perfect blend of vocals and catchy lyrics. Great tunes. “I Will Come” is a track that could bring fans of AOR music to Thunderstone if they get air-play.
In most bands, the bass guitar just seems to blend in with everything else. But, what I like about Thunderstone is that Titus Hjelm shines on many of the songs and gives them that great punch. Thunderstone has the energy and the power on this release that is undeniable to the true power metal fan.
“Another Time” is a good tear-jerking ballad that doesn't go over the edge. If you think that the whole CD is melodic and down to earth, check out “Feed the Fire” -- it's got great guitar riffs and excellent balance.
Thunderstone changes it up a little and leaves the best track for last. Which is strange because the best tracks are usually towards the top of the order. “Land of Innocence” opens with a piano intro mixed with haunting keyboards. There is no doubt in my mind that anyone who hears this song will love it. This song is totally outrageous, a KILLER track. I would consider it a masterpiece. The song has all the right elements - great acoustic guitar, echoing keyboards, and those amazing vocals. When listening to this song, crank that bitch up to 11 and listen to the power when the song reaches 4:40 seconds. Total hell breaks loose!!
This is one fantastic CD!

There is not enough information about this band, so if anyone can help... Style-wise this is a mix of hardcore and the aggressive thrash of Slayer and Dark Angel. The music is pretty fast, with a few proto-death moments ("Life's a Bitch", "Use Your Mind", etc.).

Their second release is a smashing piece of thrash along the lines of Forte (both their more classic and more modern efforts) and Viking's "Man Of Straw". At times the music gets more aggressive and fast ("Iron Curtain", "Krush Kill Destroy") smelling Rigor Mortis, at times has this genuine heavy, technical edge ("Trance of Madness", "Insult II Injury"), at times acquires this playful, crossover feeling ("Sabataged"); there is even one beautiful semi-ballad ("Those Eyes"), probably a leftover from their debut. "Invisible Death" is the highlight of the album: 7-min of smashing, heavy, dark riffs topped up by great semi-clean powerful vocals. This is a diverse listen, and there is never a dull moment.

The second veterans from the 80's UK scene to get back in the game after Onslaught, Hellbastard pull no punches sacrificing the punk/hardcore sound of "The Good Go First...Hate Militia" to bring back the more aggressive thrashy approach from "Natural Order", and as such "The Need to Kill" delivers almost as well. It seldom thrashes with all-out speed, the tempo moving from up to mid the whole time, with only the closing "Business Pig Hole" moshing out on full-throttle. Still, it stays clear off the modern elements which managed to sneak into the Onslaught comeback release, offering a firm old school sound. the last 6 tracks are re-recorded versions of songs from their previous works.

Although the name of Gumo Maniacs may not ring a bell unless you keep a close track of every single band out there, based on their music this group is not among the most unnecessary recent acts. Priest Of Lucifer starts in a very convincing way, as My Satanic Rite must be one of the fastest opening tracks ever heard on a thrash metal album. The overall direction turns out to be more varied than that, though. While a few songs like Invert The Cross run in the same kind of unrestricted and outright unstoppable vein, the album as a whole does not take the speed as deliberately over the top all the time. The most important thing is that the band put enough of effort into their music to make it sound fairly interesting, even fresh at times, which is a lot more than can be usually said. A groundbreaking or even particularly memorable release Priest Of Lucifer is not, but it surely deserves a closer look.

On the surface, Mentally Defiled's The Thrash Brigade doesn't raise any high hopes in advance. But although there is some truth to the idea of viewing this kind of releases as curiosity items at best, it would be too easy to write the whole thing off as completely unnecessary. The band play well, some of the riffs are not half-bad, and everything sounds reasonably tight. The biggest problem is just that the music does not have much personality of its own. If you are expecting stereotypical and unsurprising thrash metal, not to forget about some awfully cheap looks, then it's probably safe to say that this album is spot on. While it may be sometimes difficult to see the point of recordings like this, maybe some day The Thrash Brigade, too, will be a highly sought collectors item. Either that or a total oblivion, whichever seems more likely.

Sir Lord Baltimore are a pioneering American heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1968 by lead vocalist/drummer John Garner, guitarist Louis Dambra, and bass player Gary Justin. They are notable for the fact that a 1971 review of their debut record, Kingdom Come, contained the first documented use of the term "heavy metal" to refer to a style of music. Additionally, Sir Lord Baltimore featured a drumming lead singer, traditionally a rarity in rock and metal music. The group has been called "the godfathers of stoner rock."

"Payday" introduces more proficient guitar work, but the sound is softer, and the ties to thrash are very few (the cool speedy thrasher "So Sue Me", and the slower, but cool "See If I Care"). "Terminal Velocity" is worth mentioning as well, attempting something which recalls, but distantly, the sophisticated thrash of Megadeth. The other moment, where the listener could concentrate a bit more, is the semi-technical instrumental "Bad Heart".

One of the many Gord Kirchin's (Pile Driver, etc.) projects; the style, compared to Pile Driver, is more melodic, power/thrash metal-based, but is still enjoyable. Kirchin acquires a more melodic approach, but his blend is unmistakable. The debut is the better achievement, with at least half of the songs carrying the energetic thrashy spirit of the second Pile Driver effort, and sounded like a very promising start.
