Here's a little nugget from 1985 that's appearing for the first time on CD. Trojan were a speed metal band from the UK, and their lone release Chasing the Storm, originally out on Roadrunner Records, is now finally seeing the light of day on CD thanks to the folks at Metal Mind Productions. One look at the band photograph on the back of the digipack (which has some great fantasy laced artwork ) and you would be hard pressed to tell that Trojan were a heavy metal band, as they are all dressed in these cheesey matching white jackets, headbands, and only one of the guys, bassist Eddy martin, really has the hair to match the music. To say they look like a cross between Survivor, Crowded House, and Icon is an understatement! However, the music is actually very good, and although the production is somewhat muddy, these guys crank out some solid NWOBHM styled metal here, with just enough thrash to make things interesting. The high pitched vocal attack of Greame Wyatt reminds a little of the dude from fellow Brits Grim Reaper, so you can expect some over the top histrionics, but the guitar riffs and solos from Pete Wadeson are pretty impressive throughout. Tunes like "Hypnotized", "Backstabber", "Take No Prisoners", and the title track gallop along at impressive speeds, and things always stay melodic with just enough epic fanfare. Ultimately, Chasing the Storm is solid if somewhat unoriginal and unspectacular. It's a shame that they guys splintered apart after this release, as they seemed to have all the tools to make a name for themselves in the busy 80's metal scene. All we have left is this one document, and if you are a fan of the early power metal scene you'll want to seek this out.

The acts from Sweden who are bringing back the old school thrash metal sound of the past, are increasing fast. The Law play nice Bay Area influenced thrash - think Exodus, Vio-lence, etc., but it comes "served" with a certain presence of elements from the 90's scene- you know I mean this "sweet" groovy sound, established by Pantera and Exhorder. This mix here works quite well, resulting in cool and catchy headbangers.

This is a debut effort from Battlerage, a True Metal band from Chile, of all places. I had thought these guys would be from Italy or Greece, as this sort of stuff has become quite popular in the Hellenic part of the world, but Battlerage prove that the torch of real heavy fucking metal is burning everywhere.

I have to say I am very favorably impressed by this album. Rather than wallow in the Angra worship the South American scene seems often buried in, Battlerage are about stomping, shouting, crunching metal. Bands to think of would be Manowar, Wizard, or Paragon. They are obviously big Manilla Road fans, but despite the cover of "Necropolis" I don't hear much MR in their sound. They are too damned heavy for that, and in fact the heavy, slamming riffage is a major selling point on this CD. From the first skull-splitting riff of "Heavy Metal Axe" you know this is not going to be any flower metal here. Standout cuts include "Spawn Of Terror", "The Nameless One" and the shout-along "Battlerage". Some of the songs, like "The Cult Of Doom", are not as memorable, and the album does have some dead spots. But when Battlerage are kicking, they kick mightily. Vocalist Fox-Lin Torres is of the rough-but-tuneful school, sounding like a cross between Dio and Tann of Ironsword, and only on the otherwise excellent cover of "Necropolis" is his accent really noticeable. The vocal lines could be stronger, but the shout-along choruses rule.

The production is really excellent for a debut, especially for one from South America. Between the sharp and heavy production job and the cool cover art it's obvious the label spent some money on this recording. It takes some bands a decade to sound this good, and some never manage it. The lyrics are pretty good despite a language barrier, and I love the generally dark and aggressive themes – check that tracklist.

For True Metal fans this is a treat, and is certainly worth the effort to track it down. Battlerage don't seem to be getting much press, and that's a shame, as this is a worthy band I would love to hear more from. Here's to real heavy metal, long may it burn.

"With the Noose Around the Neck" the band unleash a merciless thrash attack, which still remains their finest hour; hard, aggressive riffs and fast tempo aplenty; one-dimensional, compared to the previous and next efforts, but a great headbanging delight all the way, with a nice ballad at the end.

This band have been bothering the underground with demos since the mid-80's. They have all been of a high quality, starting with pure thrash, and later moving onto death metal by retaining their thrash roots. On their full length the band have almost completed the transition to death metal, but there are still enough thrash riffs to keep the thrash fan interested. The music is quite brutal at times, bordering on grind-core even. With all the right elements to become one of the leaders of the death metal movement of the 90's, the guys never recorded an official release again. Their guitarist Eric Rutan later joined Morbid Angel, and the others formed Dim-Mak.

Based on the debut, this is a great slab of classic power/thrash. This is mid-tempo, heavy stuff, with nice technical guitars and very good clean, high vocals. The compositions are long, within the 5-8min range, and the overall style takes the seat between later period Helstar and early Iced Earth (but the sound is more aggressive and technical). The first half is truly a revelation, containing the best and the most aggressive tracks, among which are the great technical thrash instrumental "Warriors Anthem", and the galloping headbanger "Father Has Risen", topped by some truly striking soaring, high-pitched vocals. The second half softens a bit, with more power metal-based songs, not as fast and intense, but still intriguing and technical. Just when one starts thinking that the guys would not thrash again, comes another heavy thrash opus: "Tribunal", and the marvellous speed/thrashing closer "Beyond Stygian Creek". The guitar sound is crystal clear, and slightly stifles the bass which, when clearly heard, is quite impressive. Although the two genres covered here, are not mixed very well together, with a kind of a borderline between them, this is definitely worth your attention.

Deleted Scenes... seems to take a perverse pleasure in the unravelling of reality. If the previous album ran through the soundscapes screaming in terror, this one has clearly been living with it for a while; curled up on the floor shaking nervously with horror, jerking as each new sound reaches its ears and dissipates before a new insanity appears. Finale piece Deleted Scenes 2: In The Gauze-Womb Of The God Becoming is the album highlight, the destination of the journey, the cradle of sheer screaming fucking brutal madness, but the subtlety used when you reach there is devastating. This, then, is the end? No, thankfully, despite being about as underground as you can get The Axis Of Perdition have somehow survived thus far and a new album is imminent. Will we ever be rescued from this living nightmare?

Another worthy band who passed unnoticed, and quite undeservedly. This band played fast, aggressive thrash/death metal akin to Possessed's "Seven Churches" and Dark Angel's "Darkness Descends", probably a tad more intense. The opener from their first demo- "Shackle The Jackal", could easily pass for the first real death metal track. The second demo surprisingly comes with a much worse, fuzzy sound which considerably takes away from the music quality, but the intense delivery from the debut demo is almost completely preserved. This band is another proof that there were forces working in the underground which did as much to establish the more extreme metal genres as the much more famous and celebrated ones.

"World Won't Miss You" comes out with all the guns blazing, providing a much more hard-hitting, faster sound, all this greatly displayed with the opener "Remission". It has its downs, too: the not very convincing semi-ballad "Scattered Wits", and the slower, groovy "Rude Awakening". Another, much better effort in the ballad genre is included later: the brilliant acoustic piece "Leader Of Fools". Later on the album restores the speed domination, with great headbangers, like "World Won't Miss You" and "Gunpoint". They haven't forgotten even about the fans of doom: there is a very cool cover of Black Sabbath's "Hand of Doom".

Although almost completely unknown, Faff-Bey are one of the better thrash metal bands from Finland. "Birthday" offers very cool retro thrash in a nice headbanging tempo, but never very fast, with some modern insertions thrown in: "The Alligator", "Dead by Dawn". "A Joker" is a more light-hearted crossover number, and "Birthday" breaks the slight monotony with some great intense riffs near the end.

If we exclude the last track "The Sign" which has as much to do with thrash as the works of AC/DC or Kiss, the rest is a good attempt at technical thrash ala early Megadeth. The vocals try to stay close to Mr. Dave Mustaine, but are more of a hit-and-miss affair. The riffs are quite interesting, and follow quite close "Piece Sells,...": mid-tempo, with cool technical guitar work, without overdoing it with too many complex sections. There are times when the guys leave the thrash metal ground, and these are the moments when they try to sound more complex ("The Kindred", "Someday Rising"), but when they keep it short, like on "Pull the Plug Out", they can really thrash along with the best.

Michigan's Steel Vengeance was one of those prototypical 80's metal bands, recording several albums on an indie label (in this case, the well-regarded French label Black Dragon), making a bit of noise here and there but never rising above the pack. A frequently changing lineup recorded four full-length albums in the mid-to-late eighties, finally culminating with the Live Among The Dead album in 1991. Their style, as evidenced on 1988's Prisoners album, was classic 80's indie metal, a traditional Priest/Maiden base with traces of thrash.

A relative late comer on the thrash metal scene, Patriarch play an interesting brand of epic power metal, "accompanied" by a healthy "pinch" of thrash, somewhat along the lines of Drifter, but Patriarch are more power metal-based. Worthy of note are the excellent vocals ranging from forceful, thrashy notes to wailing, high- pitched ones. Both albums are in the same style, but the debut is decidedly the better effort. The compositions mix more intense thrashy riffs, with epic/power metal ones, and those latter ones bring some nice melodic choruses with them. The longer, progressively-laced songs are by far the band's more attractive side: "Shadowland" is a masterpiece of progressive power/speed/thrash; still some of the shorter numbers pack a punch no worse, like the energetic speed/thrasher "Father Kreator", and the fine stomping heavy thrash instrumental "Prophecy". But at least half of the songs are mid-paced, melodic power metal with hints of thrash, not bad at all, with cool melodic hooks. The sophomore release emphasizes on the melodic aspect, leaving the thrashing a bit behind.

There's a pretty good chance you haven't heard 'Tracker', or Fisc for that matter. And there's a greater chance still that tracking down a copy of this piece of wax will take some major doing, but I implore those with a taste of heavy metal and musicianship to do exactly that. 'Tracker' is sooooooo good.

For those lazy with the whole reading reviews thoroughly, let me sum it up. There's a fucking helicopter firing guitars on the front cover. That's all you need to know. Everyone else, read on.

The first 30 seconds of this 35-minute album are enough to seal the deal. A quick sample of a chopper flying before some ridiculously excellent riffing introduces a delicious guitar tone and commences proceedings on a remarkable high, while the remainder of the record just reinforces the statement made with the opening half-minute.

The drums sound like crap, and are both predictable and unexciting. Lyrically 'Tracker' floats somewhere between atrocious, hilarious and just plain cheesy, but what is lacked in literary excellence is fully compensated in the provision of a perfect vessel for memorable vocal memories. This album isn't about the lyrics. Nor is it harmed by a terrible mechanical, tinny drum tone. It's all about the guitars and bass, both of which are hard to fault. Brilliant guitar tone, infectious riffs, excellent solos. What more could I ask for? Nothing really. Sure, it's a shame that as is the case with every second album released in the 80s, the B-side is sub-par, but the highlights more than make up for any negatives. Big highlights include the entire A-side, especially the title track and 'Don't Dream Too Much'.

One of 1984's strongest releases and the only example of Fisc before they progressed to a much simpler, radio-friendly sound.

Get it.

Melodic, muscular and somewhat progressive power metal with high, searing vocals that really make this album interesting. Of course, everyone knows that Hary Conklin of Jag Panzer fame is the vocalist here. Musically this band is much more melodic than Jag Panzer. Musically, the closest reference I can think of is early Queensryche, with some early-90's Fates Warning thrown in as well. I know it's almost cliché to compare a melodic metal band to Queensryche, but that really is the best comparison here. More contemporary comparisons might me Heir Apparent or possibly Siam.

This debut is the better effort, with a sound strongly reminding of the last two Sacrifice works, especially "Soldiers of Misfortune". The vocals recall Kerrmit from their compatriots Tyrant, with a pinch of Schmier. Most of the tracks are fast and intense, but pieces from the other extreme could also be found: the doom-laden 7-min "Silent Scream", which strangely reminds of Headhunter's later efforts.

This is the only Leeway album which is of interest to the thrash metal fans. The band play heads-down classic thrash here, with very few crossover/hardcore elements. The singer has a very clean style, which distinguishes Leeway from the pack of shouted hardcore vocals typical for the NYHC (New York Hard Core) scene, where the band come from. The opener "Rise and Fall" comes with a great energetic pace, which remains for the rest of the time. Shades of crossover spring up, of course, in the form of some shorter tracks near the end ("Marathon", "Self-defense"), and a really cool moment is the smashing galloping speed/thrasher in the Attacker, Helstar vein "Tools of War", which at some stage goes straight for the throat, with direct headbanging riffs for a while- a great number! This is a very good album, compared to their later ventures which flirt with many different styles away from the thrash metal spectre.

Based on the EP, this band play raw black-ish thrash influenced by Venom and Celtic Frost, with some shades of hardcore. Short on musicianship, but quite original, having in mind that around that time the more extreme metal genres have only been slightly hinted at.

This is an excellent demo which mixes some speedy, aggressive riffs with nice technical, stylish guitar work. At times the speed recalls even Wehrmacht, and there is certain crossover aesthetics involved here, but combined with the more technical riffs, leaves quite a positive impression. The music never goes into death metal, although the intensity is quite big, and will remind you of Necrodeath and Psychic Possession, among others.

One of the quite a few thrash/death metal bands who appeared at about the same time on the French metal scene. This album is one of the better releases from that time, with a sound akin to Sacrifice's "Forward To Termination" and Kreator. The music is fast, with simplisitc, but memorable, effective riffs, and some longer songs, similar to the ones composed by the aforementioned Canadian act ("Wendigo", "War", which is a slow, pounding track, with more melodic lines, but quite cool), where something more complex goes on. Touches of more aggressive, proto-death play can sparcely be heard (parts of "Wendigo" again, the short brutal bomb "March of the Dead", "Satan's Litanies", which is a direct nod to the early German thrash scene). "The Bogeyman" is a more laid-back track, surprisingly sliding down to power metal even on some parts. "Stop the Time" is almost pure death metal, but only one of its kind. "Hardcore Copulation" closes the album in a smashing hardcore fashion, exactly what the title promises: fast, aggressive hardcore, packed in a little more than 2-min. Unlike most of the French bands from that period, the band never recorded again.

This is stylish, heavy technical power/thrash with an amazing guitar work and impressive, high vocals sometimes reminding of Rob Halford; some tracks are in the spirit of the debut, being cool melodic speed/power metal ones (there is also one very good ballad: "Mystic"), but heavy, stomping riff-fests like "Father Time" and the smashing up-tempo thrasher "The Hour Glass" raise the level much higher. "The Man Who Saw Tomorrow" is another heavy piece, but with a more technical, but equally as intense guitar work (check also the superb leads on this one!). The closing "West World" is a raging speed/thrasher, with a heavy break accompanying the chorus. Actually the overall tempo is not fast, but mid-paced to slow on the heavier numbers, and some might consider this a pullback, since Fredianelli kind of submits his flamboyant style to the not really demanding delivery, still shining all over, whereas the debut was virtually a one-man-show for most of the time, but it had its quite a few downsides as well.

I must say I was tickled pink when I heard this album. Not only is it great prog-metal, but these guys are from Kentucky! We here in the bluegrass are not known for producing world-class intellectual music, but maybe that is changing.

Poison Seed is a slick, well written, well performed album that shows a surprisingly diverse range of sounds. In general, average prog-metal songs tend to be either fast grooves with time changes intentionally placed where you won't expect them, or "ballads" that mainly serve to showcase the band's keyboardist. But Lethal takes the high road, and writes songs that stand on their own.

The album starts off with "Down", a funky, memorable song that is a perfect slice of what the band is like. There is a tendency in this style of music to overdo the jerky, choppy starts and stops that make a piece seem "syncopated", but Lethal avoids this temptation and keeps the songs flowing smoothly. Also very memorable is "Born", a beautiful slower piece that deserves some radio time.

As I have said before, progressive metal is still in its infancy, and many such bands are working out their salvation with fear and trembling. Lethal is here to stay, if this album is any indication, and I can't wait to hear their next.

The band's debut is a fine, but unpolished piece of aggressive, heavy thrash. The overall style is not too far from Sacred Reich's "Ignorance", beating even this work on the best moments: the intense thrashing "Call of Death" and "Killing for Fame", and the speed/thrash madness "Deathrage"- a riffy tour de force, worthy even of the Agent Steel debut. "Master of Nothing" is a nice blend of fast-paced and heavy, slower guitars, recalling early Celtic Frost- a dark, brooding number; another similar combination one will encounter on the cool, diverse instrumental "United States of Redskins". "Self Limited" is a bit unconvincing, trying to sound both melodic and aggressive at the same time, being longer, but the power metal riffs don't seem to work very well. The vocals are forceful, semi-death ones, and are quite close to the ones Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P.) used on the first couple of Death albums.

With ‘Vox In Excelso’ they’re up to their fourth release and they decided to make it a concept album. The storyline is about the so called “Knights Templar”, a group of warrior monks who grew to become one of the most powerful organizations in Europe and that were guardians of an “Ancient Knowledge”. Nice to have such a concept album of course but for me the music is still the most important and with that I have some mixed feelings.

First of all the continuity of the album is disrupted by the spoken parts that are to be found between the songs. They fit nicely in the concept of the album of course, but after a while they start to irritate me. Furthermore I’m not too keen on the symphonic influences that are to be found in the music. A positive aspect of this record is the musical performance of the whole band, with a special mention for old-timers Steve Bettney (vocals) and Rob Bendelow (guitar). Besides this there are some pretty decent songs to be found like for instance ‘Meet Me At Midnight’, ‘Mary’ and especially the great ‘Where Was Their God?’. Weighing the positive and less positive aspects I must conclude that Saracen has delivered an okay record, but nothing more than that.

This EP offers great headbanging retro thrash, not without the help of one of the later Celtic Frost members: the guitar player Curt Victor Bryant. "Blood From Blood" is vintage Bay-Area thrash of the heavier type, which thrashes with full force, mixing slower with faster passages. "New Vision" weighs a lot, but the main reason for this is the groovy riffs, which are abandoned towards the end, for the sake of a straight classic headbanging section. "The Less I Am" is another 10-ton steam-roller, which bears no faster surprises, which come handy on the next "Same Deep Water As You", flowing in the best tradition of late 80's Metallica, and is the best song here. "Third From The Sun" finally comes with all the guns blazing, to provide some more energetic riffs for the thrashers, a nice worthy exit to this short, but pleasant deviation from the 90's trends.

One of the originators of Japanese thrash metal, who remained one of the greatest acts to ever come out of this country (maybe only second to Ritual Carnage). The band's works of the 80's are some of the finest hours of the whole scene- great energetic, often quite aggressive thrash, crossing for the most part the Bay-Area style with Slayer, boasting very tight and sharp guitar work.

Excellent thrash metal in the Bay Area vein; without sounding too technical, Deathamin manage to come up with some stupendous riffs and nice guitar melodies, which make every song memorable, different from the others. The tempo is energetic, but without all-out speed bursts except on the excellent "Mad Rush": a smashing speedy thrasher. On the other hand we have "Appointment"- a brilliant technical thrash piece, which would make even bands like Deathrow and Target listen carefully. Early Testament would be a close call, or the Swedes Fallen Angel or Mezzrow. At the time when Testament were dropping the ball ("The Ritual"), these Canadians were making the fans feel as though the 80's had never ended, and thrash metal was still the order of the day.

ASTAROTH was created in Rome by drummer John Panko Onofri and original guitarist Steve Lenti during 1982. Lenti was supplanted by Max Cipicchia. Perhaps one of the more impressive Italian Metal bands to have emerged in the mid 80's. ASTAROTH, fronted by the confident vocals of Bob Cattani, impressed the Dutch label Rave On Records (Also home to MERCYFUL FATE & EVIL), enough to obtain a contract leading to the release of a mini album entitled 'The Long Loud Silence' in 1985. Despite great reviews all over Europe from the likes of Aardshok & Metal Forces the band were unable to capitalize on the buzz which surrounded them at the time, as Rave On Records went bankrupt just after the release of the Mini LP. The band soldiered on for a while, recording a demo tape billed as 'U.S.A.' 1988, but split shortly thereafter.

Good thrash/crossover in the spirit of late period D.R.I. and Excel, with a good thrashy attitude, also recalling the more thrashy works of Suicidal Tendencies, and various tempos; to these ears the slower material is more appealing, being a cool deviation into more thought-out song-writing, and some clever heavy riffage ("Black Sun", "Generation", the slightly less than 1-min stomper "The Rapture", the nice blend of fast-paced and slower pounding guitars at the end "Shah-Mat")). The singer is a bit hoarser than Kurt Brecht, but his delivery suits the carefree, punk-ish atmosphere.

Energetic, occasionally quite interesting thrash with touches of hardcore; all the songs are of the same up-tempo and merge together so that it's hard to distinguish one song from another at first listen. This is not very fast or aggressive music, but some of the leads are quite intriguing, and the riffs are quite heavy and crushing. Surely songs, like the speedy steam rollers "Die Again" and "Mad as Hell" are more than welcome, with their more energetic delivery, even recalling Demolition Hammer; "Body Damage" is a tribute to Slayer, with the traditional chaotic, Kerry King-like leads. The sound only occasionally reminds of the 90's trends, and the instrumental "Mind Fuck" manages to come up with some choppy, technical riffs, as well as "Infections Of Reality", which comes as a small version of the songs from "...And Justice For All", with its heavy, pounding rhythm. There are actually no pure hardcore numbers, just moments from this style are present on the shorter compositions.

Very cool energetic 80's speed/thrash metal sounding very similar to Intruder. The music is quite speedy and the guitar work is heavy, with the leads being the downside: short and screaming (although on "Power Corrupts" they suddenly get too proficient for a while). The singer is quite good, not too far from Jimmy Hamilton (Intruder again), having the same tendency to high-pitch scream sometimes. Some riffs have the original and technical edge, but the concentration is clearly on pounding, crushing ones, with a small break near the end: "World War III", which is a more melodic crossover piece.

A very good speed/thrash metal album, calling to mind Agent Steel's debut and Attacker. There is an interesting vocal duel between clean high-pitched tones and some very low proto-death growling (guess who wins!). The songs are kind of samey with a fast tempo, and merge into one another, that's why you might not be able to distinguish one song from another in the long run, but this is great music, and fans of the speedier side of thrash will find a lot to like here.

A solid take on progressive thrash metal; the guys vary things from more aggressive parts to some atmospheric passages. The style is not too far from the works of the bands from the progressive/technical thrash metal wave which started in Germany at around the same time, but the guitars here are heavier and more aggressive, and the music is maybe a bit less adventurous, and at quite a few places the guitars thrash quite intensely: check out the smashing "Heady Steams", or the fast technical thrasher "Mother Country". The songs are "ornated" with some acoustic passages and more atmospheric moments, which are accompanied by eerie chants, which nicely contrast on the sharp, aggressive guitars. This is a really engaging listen, which will also make you headbang on quite a few moments, a perfect combination of though-out and intense music. The singer is the disappointment here, with his low-tuned, gruff, muddy vocal delivery.

Interesting and varied 80's thrash - there are fast headbangers, epic/pagan tracks, and some slower ones close to Celtic Frost; a mixture which works quite well. The album opens in a shattering manner with the great aggressive smasher "Brain Washing". After that it slows down, and at least half of the tracks acquire this unique pagan atmosphere so typical for the Brits Sabbat: "Merry Sinner" is probably the best example of this influence. "Traces of Dreams" is a doom-laden, slow, heavy number, graced with some stylish leads and meaty riffs. Then the music speeds up again, with shorter, but very effective headbangers. The vocals are very good, although a bit dirty, with this rough, semi-clean blend, very similar to Chris Astley (Xentrix).

Based on the "Kill Or Be Killed" demo, this band are obviously influenced by early Exciter; this is a melodic mix of speed and thrash (more speed than thrash) also resembling Destructor, and the Whiplash debut in the more aggressive parts. This band have changed their name a few times having started as Satan, then performing as Blind Fury, before settling on this one. The style is a good mixture of the NWOBHM-sound of the past releases and thrash with a magnificent guitar work and very consistent song-writing. The style might remind you of mid-period Testament, but the guitar sound here is more pounding, and the faster sections are not that many; this is mid-paced to up-tempo music, with several more intense numbers present (the nice Sabbat-influenced "Killing for Company" from the debut). The debut contains the more aggressive, thrashy material.

Back in the day, Sweden's Blackmail were all over the internet. If there was a website that wrote about music, nine times out of ten, Blackmail was featured on it. Same goes with printed publications. It didn't matter if it was a small xeroxed fanzine or a fully professional magazine, Blackmail was reviewed in all of 'em...and 99% of the reviews were positive. After all that press coverage, the band seemed to just up and disappear. It's a shame because they were really good. They released two EP's, both of which are included in this download. So, if you didn't catch 'em the first time around, be sure to check 'em out now. I'm sure you'll enjoy what they had to offer.

"Pornography" brings back the speed from the debut, but only partially, and the increased presence of technical play makes this effort quite worthwhile, again following the late 80's Metallica trends, but this time coming up with something much better. The dirty guitar sound, however, remains, but here it is not that annoying, and headbangers like "Pornography" and "Brainless" put this album on quite a high level. The rest is heavier and mostly mid-paced, but is by all means as good.

"Hell Symphony" begins in a magnificent way, with the fast technical thrashing instrumental "Belzebub", one of the finest achievements of the style, showing the band moving far ahead in terms of musicianship. "Belial-0" follows suit, with slower, but hypnotic heavy riffs. "Lucifer" crushes in a mid-paced fashion, supported by stylish semi-technical riffage, but "Abaddon" shows no mercy, being direct aggressive thrash/death metal. "Asmodeus" is a nice nod to early Celtic Frost, as well as a part of "Leviatha", although later on that same song the guys lose patience, and start bashing with full force, providing some moments for the brutal technical death metal maniacs. The final part of the album is quite diverse, offering one cool semi-acoustic instrumental ("The Pray"), one short brutal death bomb ("The Oath"), and another instrumental ("Satan's") of the slower, doomy variety. With this one finished the band's flirtation with the more extreme metal genres, and later their music took a softer, slower, but equally as effective direction.

"Temple Of Mystery" is a masterpiece: state-of-the-art thrash, which recalls Metallica at their best, among other heroes from the 80's. The compositions are longer, and the fast sections are much more frequent. The guitars now have a more overt technical edge, and this time we have some excellent technical opuses: "Total Gym", "Underworld", graced by nice leads as well. "Temple of Mystery" is a slow, doomy, atmospheric song- the only one of its kind here. "Fallen Angel" is a brilliant speedy thrasher, alternating intense thrashy sections with galloping ones- the best song on the album, which finishes with the larger-than-life, 11-min "Personal War": an ambitious, progressive thrash piece, crossing over quite a few tempo changes and moods, also featuring some really cool semi-clean, semi-operatic vocals.
