It is an album that had to deal with great expectations. Predecessor 'The Perfect Is The Enemy Of The Good' had been a small masterpiece, and the new record was expected to hold at least a couple of crushing 'Forlani'-sized hardhitters. That expectation does not seem to be completely realistic at a first listen. 'There Will Be Blood' may be a strong song, but Burnt By The Sun does not show its many talent very easily on this last work. In other words; the listener is expected to shed some blood, sweat, and tears on this grower before being able to headbang on the bone-splintering riffs of 'Inner Station', 'Goliath', or 'The Great American Dream Machine'. The mixture of '90's-style noisecore (say Deadguy) and the ultra-tight grindroots of the rythm-section Dave Witte (Discordance Axis, Human Remains) and Teddy Patterson (Human Remains, Gridlink) hits your eardrums harder than a speed-train. This is streamlined chaos optima forma, and no other band will be able to physically follow.
Listening to the inhumane, and incredibly varied vocal performance of Olender, Witte; the living “drum-computer from hell”, and the breathtaking tightness of the band as a whole it is incomprehensible that this metal superbeast just calls it quit like that. Still, without being able to tour a lot because of many line-up changes the band never fully lived up to their potential. Yet with their previous records and this impressive 'Heart Of Darkness' they will leave a heritage that will shake the ground until far into the future. Whoever overlooks this one this year is deaf, blind, and very, very ignorant. Long story short: OBLIGATORY BUY MOTHERFUCKERS!!!
