Ok lets get back in business focusing on an inspired mix of NWOBHM and Doom Metal and in the case of Hour Of 13 from North Carolina, USA the whole thing gets even and even more interesting. It may have taken almost a year for the guys to finish that record and probably it was a hard decision for Mr Phill Swanson (also on Upwards Of Endtime, Seamount, Earthlord) to pass his dark voice from Vestal Claret (R.I.P.) to Hour Of 13 but thanks to the mystical guitar melodies and the hammering rhythm wall of Chad Davis it happened. Yes it is the co-operation of those two that gave birth to Hour Of 13 a band that presents (or represents?) a mixture of NWOBHM and Doom Metal WITHOUT the goal to sound retro and out of date!
Yes they are setting different goals for example to explore those dark and mystical melodies that are creeping somewhere between hate and sorrow enforced by an apocalyptic and occult touch that ends to be really attractive! You should try and bring all this stuff in mind taking as a fact that it is presented through a clear and HEAVY sound. They seem to play their music outside the trip of “who is going to sound more old fashioned and retro?” and yes they manage to make the listener dive even deeper into their music. Retro may be attractive as well but when it becomes a trend we should probably let someone else (probably Lee and his friends?) to grab it and sell it around. Back on topic I really enjoyed Phill’s vocals in here they sound much more different than in Upwards Of Endtime: even more straight, clean and melodic and for those that are not satsfited with some good vocals and some mystical guitar melodies ok I wrote it before: Chad hammers his bass and drums, creating this rhythm section you are still searching in this type of music.
This album is actually a tribute to all of our beloved obscure and mystical NWOBHM and Doom bands. Witchfinder General, Angelwitch, Ritual (UK) etc. shapes the NWOBHM part of the band and if you ask me about the Doom part I would mention of course the 70s Black Sabbath plus the most beautiful moments of The Purple Album by The Obsessed, some Count Raven from the debut album and of course some Pentagram. But it is better to stop asking question and turn the volume louder in order to hear some fucking METAL. If you have read it so far and you are STILL getting prepared for the usual hippie stuff, turn the fucking page and do not spend your money on Hour Of 13. they do not need them after all. They have sold their souls to Satan and he is going to give em all the money they ask for.
